SWBAT make connections between history and literature by locating concrete details about historical events.

Agenda

  • Jumpstart: Listen to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural address, found at http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/fdrfirstinaugural.html.  One of the most famous lines from his speech, which is an allusion in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, is “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself–nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” Consider that when FDR was elected, the United States had been in the middle of the Great Depression for three years. What do you think FDR was telling the American people? Do his words have any meaning for us today?
  • TKAM Glossary: Define the following words from Chapter 4 and draw a picture to help you remember the meaning of the word.
    • abominable
    • arbitrated
